Double-Hung Windows

A double-hung window can open from both the top and bottom sashes, and the panels can slide up and down or even tilt inward. This arrangement makes double-hung windows far easier to clean since you can access both sides of the panels from inside your house. It also gives you far more control over the airflow your windows allow into your home.

While double-hung windows allow for better air circulation, some homeowners say this style hurts their energy efficiency. Double-hung windows do have more openings, and can be more prone to leaking air if not closed properly. These same design features can also make replacing or repairing a double-hung window slightly more complex, since there are more moving parts to handle. Make sure to seal the window completely and get professional help with repairs if you opt for this style.

Pro Tip: Ask your window contractor whether double- or single-hung windows are better for your home. Your needs will be different depending on your budget, airflow preferences, and more.

Single-Hung Windows

A single-hung window is the “classic” window style. The bottom panel opens and slides up while the top panel is fixed in place. (Certain styles of single-hung windows come with tilt sashes to tilt the lower panel inward.) This relatively simple design makes the window far easier to seal against leaks. More importantly, it also makes single-hung windows less expensive than double-hung. However, you will sacrifice some ease of cleaning by choosing this style. Your choice will likely depend on which design you find easier to maintain with time.

Choosing Your New Windows

Some homeowners may decide that the simplicity of single-hung windows is preferable, while others may appreciate the added child safety of double-hung windows. Like many parts of home design, there’s no right or wrong choice. It all depends on your preferences and needs. Take the time to research all your options to make sure you make the right decision.
