Vinyl Or Wood For Replacement Windows?

If you’re looking for replacement windows for your Rosenberg, TX home, you’re probably trying to decide between vinyl and wood. Vinyl and wood windows are the most common for both new construction and replacement windows these days, and with good reason. Both have plenty of benefits that make them excellent choices for any home. However, both also have some potential downsides that might make one or the other the best material for your replacement windows.

Wood Windows

Wood windows are generally made from Douglas fir or pinewood on the inside, and are often covered with PVC, aluminum or fiberglass on the outside. They need a lot of maintenance. They should be repainted and resealed frequently to keep them functioning at an optimum level and looking nice as they have a tendency to rot and warp due to wet weather and extreme temperature changes.

Wood windows do provide excellent insulation. Wood naturally inhibits cold and heat transmission, and is a poor energy conductor, meaning wood windows keep the heat or cold from the outside out of your home. They are also beautiful. Wood has a lasting and traditional visual appeal that keeps your home’s exterior looking natural and classic, or can be stained or painted to match a variety of home designs.

However, wood windows can be expensive. This is usually because these windows are more expensive because they cost more money to make, and are always in high demand.

Vinyl Windows

Vinyl windows are mostly made from a rigid, man-made plastic called extruded polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. Other types of plastic and metal are also used for the sash and hook mechanisms. One of the best things about vinyl windows is that they never need to be sealed or repainted. However, this also means that you’re stuck with whatever initial color you choose.

Vinyl windows offer good insulation as vinyl has a low heat and cold conduction rate. However, most vinyl window frames are hollow and therefore allow some temperature transference between the inside and outside of your home. Vinyl windows unfortunately have a negative reputation when it comes to appearance, as they were formally only available in a small color range. However, these days, vinyl windows are available in a wide range of colors and styles for a customized appearance.

You can generally save a good deal of money by buying vinyl windows, as they are made from synthetic materials and can be easily mass-produced.
