Storm Windows
Storm Windows are not only for storms! Custom Windows offers three storm window products that can add security, noise reduction, energy efficiency and, if you have older single pane windows, significantly reduce the air and dust that is seeping into your home.
All Custom Windows’ storm windows are made from our exclusive aluminum extrusions mounted directly outside your existing window, providing a seal that immediately reduces the amount of airflow that can infiltrate your home. This not only helps insulate your home, also helps keep out pollen and dust that can find its way in through the gaps in your windows.
But how is a storm window good for noise and energy efficiency? First, whatever glass option is used, the exterior glass will absorb and dissipate a portion of the sun’s energy before it reaches the glass of your existing window. Also, an insulating air gap is created between the storm window’s glass (see glass options) and your existing window. This air gap helps slow the transfer of heat or cold from the outside into your home. This combination slows down the heat transfer which translates to greater energy efficiency.
This also adds to reduced noise intruding into your home for the same two reasons – an extra layer of glass that absorbs and dissipates sound and an air gap which also provides further insulation against noise intrusion. Choosing laminated glass (see glass options) further improves the noise suppression while adding even greater security!
And do your older aluminum windows ‘sweat’ during Houston’s summers? While our modern aluminum replacement windows with energy efficient insulated glass panes will rarely if ever have condensation, older single pane aluminum windows can have condensation drip from the frames due to the difference in temperature and humidity inside and outside the home. The simple addition of a storm window also controls ‘sweating’ which helps keep your windows cleaner longer!
And not to forget the first thing you may have thought of about storm windows, these windows do indeed add an extra layer of security to your home! The amount of security you desire can be achieved based upon the type of glass or polycarbonate you wish to use.
