Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the energy code requirement for Houston? Is it any different than Dallas or other parts of Texas?
Most people are surprised to find out that there is a difference in the energy code requirements between Houston and other parts of Texas. In fact, the IECC recognizes three different regions in Texas in their 2006 code*, with three general regions with different requirements for windows, skylights and doors. Amazingly, many window salespeople are unaware of the code requirements and this lack of knowledge can cause them to promote features that may not help in our area while ignoring some window types out of ignorance!
Custom Windows values knowledgeable contractors and consumers, so we are pleased to provide the IECC 2006 code summary for Texas below. Oh, and it is not just a dry, boring set of numbers! It helps explain what ratings mean and how they differ between cities as close as Dallas and Houston!

* Note: The IECC 2006 energy code is the most recent available and is simplified from the prior code (IECC 2000 with 2001 notes). Texas currently has not officially adopted this updated IECC version, however the requirements for Houston have not changed in this most recent version. It is presented here as it is easier to understand and more informative as well.
