To Divide or Not To Divide?
One of the key design factors that we see every day is the use of ‘divided lites.’ Divided lites in modern windows are used to mimic the individual smaller panes that are common in windows, especially those in homes of traditional, colonial and cottage architectural styles. ‘Contemporary’ designs, on the other hand, often use expansive glass with no divided lites, allowing endless views outside and permitting a great deal of natural light into the home.
One consideration when choosing your new windows is whether to retain the existing look of your home by using the same divided lite pattern, modify the appearance slightly by revising the divided lite pattern or change the overall feel of your home, inside and out, by adding divided lites where they did not exist before or eliminating them entirely where they currently exist. For some, the maintenance of the original design is paramount while for others making a change in the use of divided lites, whether slight or significant, personalizes and updates their home.
In addition to whether to use divided lites or not, modern insulated windows present many divided lite variations that can be considered for your home. Most commonly, the divided lite look is created by installing flat bars between the panes of glass to create the desired appearance of traditional lites. An alternative is to install a bar with a contoured profile between the panes. This retains even more of the appearance of traditional divided lites while keeping the outside glass surfaces a clean sheet of glass for easy cleaning. Finally, to retain the full look of a traditional colonial style window with separate panes of glass, contoured SDL bars can be used on the outside and / or interior surfaces of the glass. Contoured SDL bars in combination with our V25 or V46 vinyl windows create an appearance that is difficult to distinguish from traditional wood windows!
